The grey skies reflected her mood perfectly. No snow, just this incessant cold drizzle which seeped into your bones, and did nothing to lift her mood.
Without him, everything was hollow. The joy of the season sucked right out of her. What was she even doing here? Picking out the tree had been something they did together amidst much laughter and hot toddies to stave off the cold.
Sean would take ages, as he had to find the right one.
They all looked the same to her and despite the Christmas music blaring out loudly, she couldn’t muster the usual enthusiasm.
She pointed to a forlorn looking tree, which summed up how she felt about all of this.
“How much for that one?” she asked the spotty faced youngster stomping his feet to no doubt keep warm.
“You sure you want that one? I was told only the tall one will do.”
He pointed to the tallest tree on the lot, and Kerry swallowed her instant denial, when she saw the man behind that tree.
“Surprise, baby. I got leave after all.”
Kerry launched herself into Sean’s arms, and the world felt whole again.
The right tree was important.
