No doubt she had incurred another punishment, but, at least whatever pain they would inflict on her would show her that she was still alive, still capable of emotion, of feeling anything at all, bar this desolate emptiness inside this soulless cell, where days merged into each other.
How long had she been in this cellar? Her only contact with another human the scraps of meat shoved through the door with the foul water that made her gag, and that she drank anyway. Someone had to come for her, surely. There was no point to this otherwise. She was a pawn in a game, but someone had to care….
The heavy bolt on the metal door screeched and she put her hand out to protect her eyes from the glare of the flashlight. It prevented her from ever seeing her captors. There were many, she knew, as cold and frightening as each other, and this one’s silhouette loomed larger than any of the others.
“What have we here then? Come, pet, it’s time.”
