Screwing her eyes shut, she willed herself back to sleep, but it was useless. Bright sunshine filled the bedroom, and with a scream of frustration Katie kicked back the covers.
The immediate pounding on her door made her yank the sheets back up to cover her nakedness.
“Ma’am, are you alright in there?”
Of course, the goons, as she secretly called her protection team. God, she hated them all.
“I’m fine, nothing to report. Sorry.” She shouted through the closed door but she should have known that was useless.
“Ma’am, open the door. I need to check, or I’ll be forced to break in.”
More pounding followed, only to be interrupted by the one voice that haunted her dreams with its aching familiarity.
“Scoot, I’ve got this. Baby, open up. It’s just me now.”
Katie blinked back tears, and shrugged into the one thing she had left from her husband—his shirt. It still held his scent, and she padded across and opened the door to his twin.
