Adrenaline coursed through her, curling her muscles, as the handle turned. It was now or never. She wouldn’t be able to run very far in these heels, but she had to try.
Before she could draw another shaky breath into her lungs, those imposing doors swung open, and Lottie was momentarily blinded by the light streaming out of the hall. A mountain of a man stood before her, and Lottie wanted the ground to swallow her up.
“What do you want?”
She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t say a word as her worst fears came true. If the butler saw right through her, how was she ever going to convince his parents?
The familiar scent teasing her nostrils brought instant calm, as did the heavy hand at her back.
“Let my fiancé in, Gerard.”
