Inside she was screaming, even though the words wouldn’t come. Lungs collapsing under the smoke, she could barely see in front of her, but she had to get there.
Her memories were the only thing left, the only thing no one could take away from her, or so she’d thought.
Turns out, there was plenty they could and would take. Her home was the last thing on their list, all because she refused to soil his memory.
Her whispered words went unsaid, as strong arms cradled her and pulled her back from the brink. The soot and the mayhem cleared and through the mask delivering much needed oxygen, she saw him.
He’d kept his promise.
No matter where you are, my lovely, I’ve got you. I’ll always watch over you. Remember that and do what is right.
“Da-a-dd-y.” She couldn’t call him, as coughs racked her body, and another male voice registered.
“I’ve got you. You’re going to be all right. Just breathe now.”
Her rescuer smiled down at her, and pressed something in her hand.
“This, what you went back in for?”
She nodded through her tears of relief, and her rescuer smiled.
“Foolish, but lovely.”
