My story is called The Alpha's Assassin and for my tease today, I'm giving you the moment Zayden realizes that this job.... yeah... complicated.
(Plese note this is unedited as yet, and subject to change, so please excuse any mistakes.)
To set the scene, Zayden has just completed his last assigment, killing a leopard shifter in a cage fight, when he is approached.
“That was impressive.”
The feminine drawl behind him made him spin around. The skimpily dressed blonde smiled seductively at him, and Zayden grinned back at her. She was too skinny for his liking, but she was pretty enough. When he did take some pussy he preferred to have some flesh to hold onto. This one looked as though a man could give himself friction burn thrusting into her ass.
“That was nothing, darling,” he drawled. “Is there something I can do for you?”
Her green eyes lit up with lust as she stepped closer, and ran her hands over his chest. He had yet to put a shirt on, and something about the way she trailed her fingers over his ink set his teeth on edge. He sniffed and detected the scent of wolf all over her.
“It’s more what I can do for you,” she said and ran her hands along his beard-covered jaw and up into his hairline, while she pressed her tits into his chest.
Zayden’s bear growled a warning, and she blanched when he grasped her wrists and pushed her away with a shake of his head.
“Don’t touch what you can’t afford, darling. Tell whoever sent you I don’t talk to the monkey. If he wants me to do a job, then he needs to tell me himself.”
Fire flashed in her eyes, before she masked it, and pushing her tits out she tried again.
“Don’t you want me?” she asked and Zayden laughed and shrugged into his shirt.
“No offense, darling, but no. Right now I want to get pissed, and kick back, and not think—”
“Would twenty grand change your mind?”
Zayden couldn’t see the owner of that deep growl. It was a wolf, he sensed that much, but the actual features of this shifter were hidden underneath a cloak.
He grinned and nodded.
“Who do I kill?”
A week later, Zayden shut off his Harley outside the biker bar in one of the less salacious parts of London, and sniffed the air.
The stench of humans, and a wild array of shifters was everywhere and he wrinkled his nose in disgust. According to the intel he was given the Alpha of this particular pack was a wolf, and given to allowing any old stray shifter to join. Something that was going to get him taken out, well, that and his unnatural tendencies.
Zayden had had a hard time keeping a straight face when the old wolf shifter had parted with that titbit of information. It seemed there were those in Quinton Thorn’s pack who didn’t think a gay Alpha should be allowed to live. Zayden reached in the back pocket of his jeans to study the picture he had been given of this Quinton, and his bear rumbled.
Crushing the picture up in his hand, Zayden scowled at the door of the bar, as two rabbit shifters came out. The inebriated girls giggled when they caught sight of him, and clutching onto each other disappeared down the path.
Zayden shook his head and ignored his beast’s strange mood. He was here to kill the man, not fuck him, regardless of the fact how much this wolf seemed to appeal to his bear. Besides, appearances could be deceiving, and he sensed that taking this Alpha out wouldn’t be as easy as he first thought.
Quinton Thorn might be only in his mid-twenties and have the angelic look of a choir boy with his shoulder length blond curls, and baby blue eyes, but he was also deadly in his own way. So far every attempt at challenging him had been thwarted by the Alpha. He was known for his kindness, but if he couldn’t kill folks with that, he had no qualms ripping their throats out. That’s where Zayden came in. It seemed he was the pack’s last hope of usurping Quin.
Sure enough, when Zayden pushed through the door into the gloomy interior of the bar, all conversation stopped briefly, and he could sense the waves of suspicion in the air aimed at him. Ignoring the assembled crowd, he strolled over to the bar, and got the barmaid’s attention.
“What can I get you?” the middle aged woman asked, while wiping the bar top down with a washcloth.
“A beer, and some information,” Zayden said and she narrowed her eyes, and shook her head.
“Beer I can do, but information will cost you.”
Zayden flashed her a grin, and the woman’s cheeks pinked up nicely.
“I’ll make it worth your while,” he drawled, and she stopped mid draw of pulling him a beer. The front door opened and the gust of air that swept in brought with it the most intoxicating scent. His bear grumbled low in his throat, and it took all of Zayden’s will power to not turn around and see who had just walked in the door.
“Sorry, can’t help you.” The woman slammed his beer in front of him, and smiled at whoever had just walked in.
“The usual, boss?” she asked, and everything inside Zayden tightened when a muscly, denim clad thigh slid on the stool next to him.
The deep voice held the distinct growl of his wolf, and Zayden forced his gaze away from the way this male’s jeans hugged the impressive bulge in his groin. He trailed his eyes up the man’s sculpted abdomen, clearly visible through the tight t-shirt he was wearing. Zayden took in the bulging biceps that flexed in a manner that made him want to run his tongue along the swirls of this man’s ink, as the wolf shifter ran a hand through his blond hair. His gaze arrested at the far too enticing sight of the way the shifter’s Adam’s Apple bopped as he swallowed. A hard jaw covered in designer stubble, dimples as he smiled at the bartender, a sinful mouth, and blue eyes the color of a summer’s sky.
“That your Harley out there, stranger? Nice bike.”
Quinton Thorn raised his glass in a silent salute, and Zayden’s world tilted when he looked into the eyes of his prey.
Bear shifter Zayden Reid makes his living doing what he does best—killing people. The sought after assassin doesn’t have to think twice when he’s offered a lot of money to kill the Alpha of a wolf pack, until he scents his mate.
As the Alpha of his pack Quinton Thorn is used to giving orders. He may be gay, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak, and he’ll squash any challenge to his leadership with ruthless efficiency. When the threat comes from a source he trusts, however, can he afford to give into his feelings for his mate, knowing that he’ll endanger everyone under his protection?
The mating bond cannot be denied, no matter what the consequences, and they might well kill.
