Happy Saturday, peeps. Pull up a chair, grab your favorite beverage, and get to know the lovely Lee Piper. She has a new book coming out soon, so I've pinned her down in my hot seat today to find out some more about her.
Welcome to my blog, Lee!
Thanks so much for having me here, Doris!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sure thing, my name is Lee Piper. I’m an Australian rock romance author (think dirty guitar riffs, thundering drum beats and smokin’ hot men) who is obsessed with writing, reading and reviewing contemporary romance. I fangirl over Kylie Scott, never go a day without chocolate and need to run along the beach to think up storylines.
What made you write ‘this’ story?
Rock My Body is Book #2 in the Mondez Series and runs parallel with Book #1, Rock My World. Each story is based on one of the four men from the band, Mondez, however is written from the perspective of the women who ultimately bring them to their knees.
I’m really passionate about eradicating the stigma surrounding mental health, so I decided to write a novel from the viewpoint of a heroine who has been medically diagnosed with Anxiety. It’s a great way to not only highlight the (many) challenges of this illness but to also celebrate the strength of someone who lives with it, through humour and music.
Tell us about your cover.
(It’s a work in progress, I’m excited to see it!)
Describe a typical day’s writing for us
I’m currently on maternity leave from full time work, so in between changing nappies, feeding, sterilizing bottles, singing God knows how many nursery rhymes, not to mention wrangling a four year old, I write when I can. Normally this happens when my youngest is down for her afternoon nap and my eldest is immersed in Sesame Street. Once they’re both asleep in the evening I then fight off fatigue with a sugar hit of chocolate and pump out as many words as I can before I can no longer see straight. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
(Ah. I remember it well from when my youngest was a baby!)
What inspires you?
Other writers inspire me. The fact that there are so many ridiculously talented people out there who can transport readers to another world through the turn of a phrase, is truly mind blowing. And it doesn’t stop there. Every word chosen has been so carefully thought out, edited and then edited again. There’s so much blood, sweat and tears behind every book published and this willingness to share a part of oneself with the world, is beyond brave.
Music also has the same effect. And I’m talking the heavy rock kind—the louder the better. For every book I write, I have a soundtrack. Cog’s, The New Normal was the album which I listened to religiously while writing Rock My World. Whereas Dead Letter Circus was on repeat while writing Rock My Body, and Twelve Foot Ninja (all awesome Aussie bands btw) is what I’m listening to at the moment while writing the third book in the series, Rock Me.
If you weren’t a writer what would you be?
Lost. Seriously. It took me thirty-three years to finally find what I’ve been put on this earth for. Before this, I wandered aimlessly from one hobby/interest to the next. I tried everything: painting, horse riding, property investing, athletics, fashion design, cooking, business, the list goes on and on. Nothing fit, you know? It all felt too forced. Since I’ve started writing, I’ve never been more excited about the possibilities which lie ahead. I drown myself in amazing books by supremely talented writers, I write every single day, and as difficult as it can be making any headway in this industry, I’m so humbled by the positive feedback given on my books so far.
Do your characters ever surprise you?
Absolutely! Dominic Mondez, lead guitarist and hero of Rock My Body, was a dark horse who surprised the bejesus out of me. When I started writing, he was the typical ‘player’ character. You know, the guy who refused to sleep with the same woman twice (how many times have we read this trope?!). However, as the story progressed, he slowly unravelled these unexpected layers, it was like peeling back a damn fennel. Turns out, the bravado was a false front put on to protect himself from a very painful past.
What could not do without when you’re writing?
Chocolate. Always and forever—we’re a match made in m&m heaven.
(So with you there, lol!)
What words of wisdom do you have for the aspiring authors out there?
Write what you know. The written word is more authentic when it comes from personal experience, though that’s not to say you can’t embellish it to suit your own purposes. For instance, at the beginning of Rock My Body, the heroine, Riley, is using exercise as a coping mechanism for her Anxiety. I have been diagnosed with Anxiety myself and I often use running along the beach to help clear my head. Sadly, I’ve never collided with the hottest man ever to grace pecs and abs while doing so but I’m hopeful it’ll happen. Any day now.
Where do you see yourself in ten year’s time?
In ten year’s time, I’ll be a New York Times bestselling author. I’ll be sipping margaritas on my beachfront property, partaking in a group chat with Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward, Kylie Scott and L.J. Shen, having just finished my latest masterpiece. Yep, a girl can dream.
Do you have a favourite quote?
‘If you want to be a writer, you must do two things about all others: read a lot and write a lot.’ – Stephen King.
This sounds like the perfect life to me.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?
Whenever I feel stuck on where to go with a scene or believe my main characters are flipping me the proverbial bird, I head to the beach, turn up the volume on my iPod and run. For some reason, the combination of open space, fresh air, exercise and heavy rock music, gets my creative mojo working. Every. Single. Time.
What other books can your readers look forward to?
Rock My Body is being released on June 3 through Evernight Publishing and I’m currently working on Rock Me, Book #3 in the Mondez series. This book is hil-ar-i-ous, I’m having so much fun writing it. The main character, Katrina, is an absolute crack-up. Her band, Adrift, has recently been signed with a major record label and is on their first tour with the boys from Mondez. Many, many shenanigans ensue. Enough said.
And finally can you share the blurb and excerpt with us?
I would love to! Here is the blurb for Rock My Body which releases on June 3 through Evernight publishing:
Twenty-two year old Riley Sears promises herself never to fall in love unless it is with a guy who is long-term boyfriend material. She is not crazy, her psychologist reassures her of that, but when faced with situations she cannot control… Well. Her anxiety skyrockets.
Enter Dominic Mondez, the hottest creature ever to grace pecs and abs. The notorious playboy propositions Riley with the best sex of her life—his words. However, after learning he never sleeps with the same woman twice, Riley’s decision becomes remarkably simple.
No. Way. In. Hell.
Sadly, traversing the murky waters of friends without benefits is far from simple, especially since Dominic is the lead guitarist of local rock band, Mondez. He is also tempestuous, a womanizer, and—even worse—inexplicably jealous. Dominic is bad for Riley in every possible way. Bad, bad, bad.
If only her body would listen.
He was watching me, I could feel it. My body sensed him long before my head did and started tingling. Everywhere.
Just the thought of him made my heart pound. Traitorous thing. It merrily rammed against my ribcage as soon as I pictured his tall, muscular body and dishevelled, russet hair. My fingers itched to reach out and delve through the soft strands—they remembered what it felt like to tug down on them as he groaned into my open mouth—but I shifted in my seat and sat on them instead. I wasn’t going down that road again, hell no. I was done. D.O.N.E.
A low chuckle cut through the muted sounds of heavy rock music emanating from inside, its gravely sound resonating with my downstairs department, causing a deep blush to stain my cheeks.
Clearly, I wasn’t fooling anyone.
What in the name of sweet baby Jesus is he even doing here?
I tried so hard to focus on what Sebastian was saying. Thankfully, he held up his end of the conversation despite my unexpected inability to formulate any words. We’d been sitting together for a while without a single awkward pause so I nodded, smiled, and even laughed when required. To be fair, it was a pretty decent pick-up attempt. Well, until he showed up.
Blue eyes burned my skin.
You don’t own me, you don’t own me, you don’t—
I swallowed, steeled myself and then glanced across the beer garden.
Dominic was leaning against the wall, his black, button-down shirt almost bursting at the seams. I blamed those insanely strong pecs and biceps. Honestly, they were huge. And the way his dark blue jeans hung enticingly low off narrow hips… Well. It should be illegal. He was going to give someone—aka me—a cardiac arrest if he wasn’t careful.
I shook my head. With a bottle of beer in one hand and a buxom blonde in the other— this one looked nastier than most—the guy was the physical embodiment of everything I despised. Truly.
If only my body would listen.
Raising the drink to full, kissable lips, he tipped his head back, piercing gaze still locked on me. He then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, a flicker of emotions I couldn’t identify crossing his face when he noticed my breath catch.
The girl must have registered his distraction too because she started rubbing herself up against him like an overly aroused limpet. Gross. He broke contact with me and looked down at her, a dark smile tugging his lips. After murmuring something in her ear and slapping her on the ass, she giggled. I looked away, that familiar painful knot forming in my stomach once more.
Damn you, Dominic Mondez. Damn you to hell.
Thanks so much for stopping by and answering my nosy questions, Lee.
