With tears clouding her vision she took in the scene. His favourite chair was still there, seemingly waiting for him to return. The open books testament to the fact that he always read several stories at once.
How she used to tease him about that. His mind’s ability to jump about like a demented flea, yet retaining information with photographic memory skills… until the day he couldn’t anymore. Losing his train of thought had been the first sign of what was to come. They’d laughed about it at the time, not thinking too much on it.
In truth she’d thought he’d been pulling her leg, because that had been her usual modis operandi, made ten times worse by the hormones now flooding her system.
She angrily swiped away more useless tears. He’d never know about the life she was carrying under her heart. He’d never drink that cup of cocoa that had long since congealed, and which had a thick layer of mould on its top now.
Forcing herself to take that last step, she closed the books he’d been reading. The paper rustling almost sounded like a sigh, as though the room was grieving with her.
“Sleep well, beloved.”
