Heart threatening to beat itself out of her chest, Kateri pulled back her arrow. It should have been a simple matter of killing the animal. Her family needed the meat. She needed the trophy to show her skill as a hunter, but this… no, it couldn’t be.
The wolf growled, showing her lethal teeth, and approached her slowly, sniffing the air.
Kateri, too, inhaled sharply.
The bow fell out of her hands and she sank to her knees as the wolf came close enough to touch. Hands locked in her fur, she stared into the eyes of her lost sister.
