He was always there, waiting. A menacing presence threatening to take over, to devour the last shreds of her humanity left, and she was so tired. Tired of fighting, of denying, who she truly was. Besides, trapped, alone, and with no chance of anyone else coming to her rescue, he was her last chance.
Curled up into a tight ball, she waited. She might be inviting the devil himself, but who else would defeat her captors.
Heavy footsteps approached along the long corridor, and Anna counted each one as it came closer, in tune with the hot breaths behind her. Closing her eyes, Anna concentrated, willed her breathing to slow down, just like her father had told her.
She could almost hear his voice, as he whispered the words in her ear every night, long after the hunters had killed him.
Embrace the wolf within, and he will save you, as you become one. Trust in the ancient spirits flowing through you.
If ever she needed that strength, the time was now. The door shoved open and Anna looked down the barrel of the gun.
“Kill the bitch, before she turns.”
Anna threw her head back and howled.
