Muscles burning, he pushed himself that last bit. He had to get to them. It was his fault they were stranded after all. He should have believed her.
Their frightened cries echoed in his ears, and with one last big heave he hauled himself over the outcrop. The sharp stone sliced through his skin, but he barely felt the pain, too focused on the unconscious woman and the little panther cub curled into her side.
“There, I’ve got you little guy. Let’s see to your mummy, shall we.”
His son yawned and swiped at his hand with one tiny paw.
